I’m Laura, 40, a grocery store cashier. Late one night, just before closing, a tired mom came through my lane with only the basics—milk, bread, eggs, and baby formula. When I told her the total, she came up six dollars short and asked me to remove the formula. The way she looked at it broke my heart.
I reached into my apron and covered the difference. Six dollars felt like nothing. She thanked me with tears in her eyes and left. I forgot about it by the time I went to bed.
