I’m Laura, 40, a grocery store cashier. Late one night, just before closing, a tired mom came through my lane with only the basics—milk, bread, eggs, and baby formula. When I told her the total, she came up six dollars short and asked me to remove the formula. The way she looked at it broke my heart.

I reached into my apron and covered the difference. Six dollars felt like nothing. She thanked me with tears in her eyes and left. I forgot about it by the time I went to bed.

The next morning, my manager called me into his office. My heart dropped when he showed me the security footage—but instead of scolding me, he handed me an envelope with my name on it. The woman had come back.
