A gift returned: the power of compassion

When a simple act of service becomes an act of courage

That day, the bakery was quiet, almost too quiet. A pregnant woman pushed open the door, looking hesitant. She humbly asked for a loaf of bread but admitted she couldn’t afford it. Before her, the young saleswoman,  Camille , felt an instinctive impulse: she offered her a still-warm loaf, simply out of kindness. In return, the customer,  Élise , gave her a small hairpin, a modest object but given with a grateful smile: “You’ll need it someday.”

A tender gesture… which will nevertheless cost her dearly: the boss, witnessing the scene, decides to fire her. Camille leaves the bakery, the pin in her hand, without yet imagining what this exchange will unleash.
