From that night on, she made herself a promise: to look after them. After each shift, she saved a few coins from her tips to buy them food. She scoured thrift stores for clothes, provided them with notebooks, and in the evenings, had them read and write around her kitchen table.
For ten years, Emily was much more than a benefactor to them: she became a true surrogate mother.
Neighbors whispered that she was wasting her life. Some ridiculed her, convinced these girls would have no future. Emily sometimes doubted herself, but every “Mama Emily” whispered in their small voices swept away her hesitation.
