3. The Truth About the Card

In a small meeting room, Agent Pierce placed the metal card between us.

“Do you know what this is?”

“I thought it was a credit card. My father gave it to me.”

He nodded.
“Did Charles Carter ever discuss work outside of Macon Engineering?”

“No. He was an engineer for thirty years.”

Pierce folded his hands.
“Your father was more than that. He was one of three custodians overseeing a classified repository of U.S. sovereign assets.”

My mind went blank.

“That card,” he continued, “provides access to a Treasury-backed account of extraordinary value. It triggered alerts because it hadn’t been used in over a decade—and because your father has passed.”

“Are you saying this is… a government account?”

“Partly. And partly private. A legacy deposit.”

He met my eyes.
“You’re the sole beneficiary.”

Then he said the number.
