That could reverberate well beyond a federal courthouse in Newark. When Representative LaMonica McIver entered the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility at Delaney Hall in Newark on May 9, the encounter lasted only minutes.

Yet the consequences have unfolded over months — encompassing federal charges, constitutional claims, political aftermath, judicial scrutiny, and a broader debate about how far elected officials can go when confronting executive‑branch power.

At the heart of the controversy is a clash that began as a congressional oversight visit and culminated in a physical altercation outside an immigration detention center.

Prosecutors allege McIver assaulted and interfered with federal officers as they attempted to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who had joined the delegation.
