Clarification About Agency Involvement

As investigators continued their review, it became clear that the officers involved were affiliated with Customs and Border Protection rather than ICE. This distinction, while significant in terms of jurisdiction and operational authority, did little to slow the already-established narrative.

CBP and ICE, though both part of the Department of Homeland Security, serve different roles. ICE primarily focuses on immigration enforcement within the interior of the United States, while CBP’s responsibilities extend to border security, customs inspections, and certain federal task force operations. The confirmation that CBP agents were involved contradicted early assumptions but received less attention than the initial claims.

By the time this clarification was made public, many political statements and media reports had already framed the incident as an ICE-related enforcement action, reinforcing public perceptions that were difficult to reverse.
