How to react in case of brake failure on a vehicle

How to use it correctly?

  1. Gradually engage the handbrake  to slow down smoothly.
  2. If you start to skid, release the brakes slightly  to regain control.

Identify a safe place to stop

Head towards a safe area if possible:

  • Emergency lane on the motorway.
  • Stabilized shoulder or clearing.
  • Uphill  (which naturally slows the vehicle down).

Avoid:

  • Avoid stopping  suddenly  in the middle of a highway.
  • Avoid sharp turns to avoid an obstacle (risk of rolling over).

Use external elements to slow down in case of an emergency

As a last resort, use external elements to reduce your speed.

If no other option is available,  slow down by rubbing your vehicle against:

  • A safety barrier  (without sharp angles).
  • A grassy embankment.
  • Curb edges  (beware of loss of control).

Absolutely avoid trees and walls, they’re too dangerous!

Inform other drivers about your problem

Make sure other drivers understand the critical situation.

  1. Activate your hazard lights immediately.
  2. Use the horn if necessary  to alert vehicles around you.
  3. Wave a cloth or your arm out of the window  to signal an emergency.

This allows other drivers to  react promptly  and give you space.

Secure the situation once you have stopped.

Have you managed to stop moving? Here are the actions to take immediately:

  1. Turn off the engine  and  engage the handbrake .
  2. Exit the vehicle carefully , especially if you are on a busy road.
  3. Call emergency services  (112 or roadside assistance) to report the incident.
  4. Place a warning triangle  30  meters  behind your vehicle if possible.
