“Hey,” he said. “Did I do something wrong?”

I sat in front of him, right on the floor, so we were eye level.

“No, you didn’t. But I did.”

I set the folder between us.

“I found this.”

Noah tensed. “It’s nothing. Just… plans.

I was just being prepared. It’s not a big deal.”

I opened the notebook to the Rules page and turned it toward him.

Noah shrugged.

“Nobody. I just figured it out. So I wouldn’t be a burden.”

Burden… my heart broke.

How could he ever think he was a burden?

I pointed to the third rule. “‘Don’t make people choose.’ What does that mean?”

Noah hesitated. “It means if I don’t need much, it’s easier.”

“Easier than what?”

He glanced at me.

“I can stay with you.”
