Mark finally appeared in the doorway, eyes sliding away from mine. “It’s temporary,” he muttered. “They needed somewhere to stay.”
I reached into my purse and took out my phone.
I didn’t answer. I made one call.
Five minutes later, headlights swept across the yard, followed by the unmistakable shape of a moving truck, two uniformed security officers, and a property manager stepping onto the porch with a leather folder tucked under his arm.
The house went quiet.
And that was when I spoke.
“Everyone out. Now.”
The silence that followed was thick enough to press against the walls.
Susan’s smile twisted into something ugly. “You’re confused,” she said, stepping toward me. “Mark is the man of this house. He invited us. You gave this place to Rachel. You have no authority here.”
I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t need to.
