“She knows there’s an inheritance coming, but we’ve never discussed specifics. I think she assumes it’s mostly just the house and a small savings account.”
James nodded thoughtfully. “And currently, everything goes to her.”
“She’s my only child.
My only heir.”
But James, I met his eyes directly. “I don’t want someone who doesn’t value me to benefit from my death. I want to leave my money to people and causes that matter, to make sure my legacy means something.”
“I understand, but Emily, this is a big decision.
Maybe you should give it some time. See if the situation with Jessica improves.”
“No,” I said firmly. “I’ve given enough time to trying to maintain a relationship that only exists when it’s convenient for her.
I’m done begging for scraps of affection from my own daughter.”
James studied me for a moment. “What did you have in mind?”
Or maybe something for elderly people who’ve been abandoned. I want to make sure the money goes to people who will use it to help others, not to buy bigger houses and more expensive cars.”
“That’s very generous, Emily.”
“And what about Jessica?”
I thought about this for a moment. “Leave her something small.
Maybe $10,000. Enough that she can’t contest the will for being left out entirely, but not enough to matter to someone with her lifestyle.”
