After giving birth to my twin daughters, I thought my husband would choose us over his mother—but he didn’t. Instead, I got a hurried call: Derek couldn’t pick us up from the hospital because his mother was suddenly “sick.”

I grabbed a taxi, expecting to find a worried mother-in-law or a minor emergency. Instead, I arrived home to a front yard scattered with our belongings and a note taped to my suitcase: “Get out of here with your little moochers! I know everything. Derek.”

Panic set in. Derek didn’t answer, so I called my mom, who rushed over. Together, we discovered the truth: Derek’s mother, Lorraine, had faked an illness, bribed a nurse, and locked us out—just because our daughters weren’t boys.

Rage and disbelief consumed me. I drove to the hospital, confronted Derek, and told him everything. Shock turned to fury on his face. He immediately drove home with me, and this time he confronted Lorraine.
