“But that’s fine. I’ve been preparing for this.”
There was a long pause. “What do you mean preparing?”
The silence that followed was so complete, I thought the call had dropped.
Finally, he spoke. His voice barely a whisper. “You what?”
“I sold the house 6 months ago.
The sale closes in 3 weeks. I thought you should know so you can start looking for somewhere else to live.”
The explosion of anger that came through the phone was so loud I had to hold it away from my ear. Yara was screaming in the background and Abram was shouting questions I couldn’t quite make out.
When the noise finally died down, he spoke again. “You can’t do this. The house is our home.
We’ve invested money in renovations.”
“With my money,” I reminded him. “And the house was never in your name. It was mine to sell.”
We can’t afford rent somewhere else.”
The irony wasn’t lost on me. The man who had threatened to drain my bank account was now worried about paying his own way in the world. “You’ll figure it out,” I said.
“You’re both adults. You’ve been telling me I need to act my age and stop relying on family. I thought you’d appreciate me taking your advice.”
“This is insane.
