I continued packing, not bothering to look at him. “Yes, she did.”

He was quiet for a moment. “The thing about your account, I was just angry.

We don’t have to go that far.”

Now, I did look at him, studying his face. He was handsome, my son. He looked like his father with the same dark hair and brown eyes, but there was something different in his expression now, something calculating.

“You’re worried,” I observed. “I’m not worried,” he said quickly. “I just don’t want things to end like this between us.”

I zipped up the first suitcase and reached for the second one.

“Things ended between us a long time ago, Abram. You just didn’t notice.”

The truth was I had been planning this moment for 6 months. Ever since I overheard Yara on the phone with her mother laughing about how easy it was to manipulate the old bat into paying for everything.

Ever since I found the brochures for expensive nursing homes hidden in Abrams office with notes about the costs and waiting lists. They thought I was a fool. They thought I was weak, dependent, trapped.

Tomorrow they would learn just how wrong they were. The morning light filtered through my bedroom curtains as I folded the last of my clothes. Each piece told a story of the life I had built, the sacrifices I had made.
