“I’d like to thank you,” he said. “Properly. Tell me what you need.
Anything.”
I shook my head right away.
“Oh—no,” I said. “Please. I didn’t come here for that.
I don’t need anything. We’re okay.”
“I expected that,” he replied gently. “So I prepared two options.”
He nodded toward the window.
Parked outside was a sleek silver SUV.
“You can choose that vehicle,” he said, “or a check for $100,000.”
I stared at him.
Then at the car.
Then back at him.
“I’m sorry,” I said slowly.
“Did you say 100,000?”
