There were no jokes and no smirks. Instead, his voice shook like it wasn’t used to being this honest. I stared at him for a long second, trying to locate the version of him I used to know.

“You were awful,” I said finally.

“I know.

And I regret every moment of it.”

I didn’t smile, but I didn’t walk away, either.

We ran into each other again a week later. Then again after that. And eventually, it didn’t feel like chance.

It felt like a slow, careful invitation.
