I looked at my son, who was staring at me as if he’d never seen me before.
“Your birth parents had died in a car accident.
I didn’t know if I’d ever see Sophie again, but I knew I could be a mother to you.”
Derek’s eyes glistened with tears. He reached for Sophie’s hand.
“So we’re not…?”
“No,” I said softly. “You’re not related by blood.
Not even distant cousins. You’re safe. This love is real.”
Sophie exhaled so hard her shoulders shook.
She leaned into Derek, who held her tight, and they just stood there like that for a moment, taking it in.
