“Out there?”
I took a breath.
I met her eyes.
Tommy blinked.
“You don’t have any kids?” he asked.
“I did,” I said softly.
“They’re gone now.”
His face softened.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“Thank you,” I said. “So, I decided I didn’t want my estate going to some random distant relative or board member who only sees dollar signs. I wanted someone whose heart I could trust.”
“Yes,” I said.
“I needed to see who people really are when they think you’re beneath them.”
Tommy frowned.
“Well,” he said, “most of them flunked.”
That made me laugh.
Elena shook her head.
“People are cruel,” she said. “We know that too well.”
