The Green Light Law has drawn renewed attention in light of high-profile incidents involving law enforcement and traffic stops. Following the 2023 death of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent during a shootout after a traffic stop in Vermont, critics of the law renewed calls for stricter enforcement of immigration-related driving regulations. Hector Garza, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, argued at the time that the law prevents law enforcement officers from accessing information that could help keep them safe during traffic encounters. “Any information that can help law enforcement stay safe as they conduct their duties has pretty much been taken away with this Green Light Law,” Garza stated.
