The two friends had played the lottery for years. Week after week, they bought tickets with no real expectation. But when Cook finally won big, he remembered the handshake deal they made in 1992.

“A handshake’s a handshake, man,” Cook said in an interview.

They chose the lump sum payout of $16.7 million. After taxes, both men walked away with around $5.7 million each. Feeney, already retired from the fire department, didn’t make big plans. Cook, now a grandfather and great-grandfather, retired after the win.
