I stared at the wall after the call ended, the word unnecessarily echoing in my head.

My husband, Mark, was in the living room, stretched out on the couch, scrolling through his phone like it was any other night. He was thirty-three, practical to the point of being dismissive, raised in a house where feelings were inconveniences and his mother’s word was law.

“You called the doctor again?” he asked without looking up.

“He’s burning up,” I said. “This isn’t normal.”

 

“You’re tired,” Mark replied. “You always spiral when you’re tired. He’s probably teething.”
