The venue, the flowers, the food, the music—even the photographer.”

“But… but the deposits, the contracts—”

“All forfeited, I’m afraid.

Turns out vendors don’t like last-minute cancellations. Who knew?”

Another silence. Then:

“But why?

Just because I asked you to uninvite some people.”

I set down my teacup with a delicate clink. “Oh, sweetheart, it wasn’t about the Weatherbees. Though I must say, calling me a pest for wanting to include people who love you was rather illuminating.”

“I didn’t mean—”

“Of course you did.

And your brother made it even clearer when he said he’d rather lose his mother than lose his sister.”
