She only wanted to know how much money I had received. “It was a fair sale,” I replied cautiously, without giving specific details about the amount. Patricia leaned forward, getting closer to me.
“Mom, you know you can trust me. I am your daughter, and I worry a lot about your future. I imagine it must have been a considerable amount, and I want to make sure you are making the best decisions for your financial security.”
It was as if I were talking to a salesperson trying to convince me to buy something, not my daughter genuinely concerned about my well-being. “Patricia,” I said, “I appreciate your concern, but I am perfectly capable of handling my own financial affairs.”
“Of course, Mom. I didn’t mean to say you weren’t capable,” she replied quickly.
Her voice softened, but I could detect a hint of frustration. “It’s just that… well, Aaron and I have been going through some financial problems lately. The business hasn’t been going as well as we hoped, and I thought maybe…”
There it was—the real reason for her unscheduled visit.
She hadn’t come to see me because she was worried about me, or because she wanted to spend time with her mother. She had come because she had found out I had money and she wanted a piece. “Maybe what, Patricia?” I asked, although I knew perfectly well what she was going to say.
