My daughter Emma had just turned sixteen, and the mother-in-law arrived last: flawless, confident, holding a small velvet box in her hands.

Inside was an expensive watch — heavy, luxurious, clearly not age-appropriate. Margaret smiled as if the gift were something more than a simple gesture of attention.

— Put it on, she insisted.

Emma thanked her, but never tried the watch on. In the evening, when the guests had left, I saw the box untouched on her desk.

— Why didn’t you put it on? — I asked.

My daughter tensed up and quietly replied:

— You’ll understand if you put it on yourself.
