My smile faltered. People turned to look.
She leaned closer. “You’re humiliating my husband.
Imagine his friends seeing you like this.”
That’s when I felt the old shame creeping in. That voice telling me I was foolish to think I deserved more. That I should’ve stayed in beige, kept quiet, and remembered my place.
But then, something shifted.
Josh stood up and tapped his glass.
“Everyone,” he said, “may I have your attention?”
The room went quiet, and all eyes landed on him. Emily adjusted her dress, expecting praise. She looked smug, thinking he’d make a joke at my expense.
Instead, Josh looked at me.
People nodded and murmured.
