For a moment, I thought he might argue. But then he grabbed his bag and slung it over his shoulder. He turned to leave, and that’s when I saw his mother, Carla.
She was standing in the hallway, her arms crossed, her face a mask of fury.
“Mom,” Jake said, his voice losing some of its edge. “I was just…”
“I know exactly what you were doing,” Carla snapped, her voice low and dangerous.
“I saw it all. I was just waiting.”
Jake shifted uncomfortably. “It’s not what it looks like.”
“Oh, really?” She stepped closer, her eyes locked on his.
“Because from where I was standing, it looked like you were stealing toys from your own children to give to someone else’s kid.”
“I bought those toys,” Jake said defensively. “They’re mine.”
Carla’s expression didn’t change. “You gave those toys to Oliver and Mia.
“Mom, you don’t understand…”
