“Amanda left me,” he said, sounding defeated.
“She said I wasn’t worth it.”
He tried to come back into the kids’ lives after that. He showed up at my door with flowers one evening, his tone suddenly soft, almost pleading.
He said he wanted to see Oliver and Mia, and that he wanted to start fresh.
But the damage was done.
Oliver and Mia didn’t run to the door. They didn’t ask when Daddy was coming inside. They just stayed close to me, holding my hands.
I looked at Jake and felt nothing but a cold certainty.
“You made your choices. You can’t walk back in now and expect us to forget everything.”
His eyes flickered with desperation, but there was no room for him anymore. I closed the door gently but firmly.
And for the first time in months, I felt no guilt.
