“I just need to know what’s on this,” I said quietly. “If anything.”
He nodded and ran the card.
Paused.
Typed again.
Then his entire posture changed.
“Ma’am,” he said suddenly, his voice louder than necessary, eyes fixed on the screen. “I’m going to need you to stay right where you are.”
My stomach dropped.
He lifted his phone and spoke quickly. “This is branch twelve. I need security to secure the lobby immediately.”
The sound of the automatic doors locking echoed through the room like a verdict.
Ava’s fingers tightened around mine. “Mom?”
