“How’s the beach? Did the girls have fun?”
I turned the phone face down and didn’t answer.
A truck was pulling away.
A big one.
My chest tightened.
“Mommy, why is there a big truck?” one twin asked.
“I don’t know,” I said.
For once, I didn’t soften it or try to make it sound better.
I unlocked the door.
The hallway was chaos.
Packing foam everywhere.
A massive flat screen TV leaned carefully against the wall, and a brand new media console sat unopened beside it.
