So my brain did the thing.
He doesn’t want you anymore.
Then came the looks.
I’d be in the rocking chair nursing Theo, hair a mess, shirt stained. I’d feel eyes on me and look up.
Jake would be standing in the doorway.
Just watching.
His eyes would go shiny.
His jaw would clench, like he wanted to say something and swallowed it instead.
If I said, “What?” he’d blink and look away fast.
Other times, he wouldn’t look at me at all. He’d ask, “You okay?” while staring at the fridge.
