He was pouring coffee. Maddie was stealing Cheerios.
Theo was half-asleep in his swing.
It was only a fraction of a second, but I saw it.
Then he smiled. “Yeah. Why?”
I shrugged.
“Just wondering.”
He kissed my cheek. “Love you. I’ll text you later.”
The smile didn’t touch his eyes.
My stomach dropped.
Whatever was going on, he wasn’t going to tell me on his own.
He left for work. The house was, for once, quiet. Theo was napping.
Maddie was watching cartoons.
I stood at the kitchen window, staring at the van.
