I parked where I could see his car and waited.
An hour passed. Then another.
And Shawn walked out.
He wasn’t alone. A woman walked beside him, laughing at something he’d said. She was younger than me, dressed casually, her hand resting comfortably on his arm.
I recognized her immediately.
She was Mrs. Keller… Johnny’s school counselor.
They stopped by Shawn’s car. He leaned against it, smiling that smile I used to think was just for me.
