I told them I wouldn’t look for him, at least not now. I wasn’t willing to disrupt the life built on love and stability for someone who had never been able to hold his own together. I told Miles I was angry that he’d kept the truth from me—but I also told him how grateful I was that he stayed.

Liz passed away two days later. Her funeral was quiet. People spoke about her humor and stubbornness, never mentioning the daughter she left behind. I stood at the back, connected to her only by blood and goodbye. On the drive home, the space between my father and me felt different—lighter, but deeper. He asked once more if I wanted the name.
