Not in obvious ways. But there was a lightness to him I hadn’t seen since before Ron died.

He’d smile at his phone in the middle of conversations.

He started learning phrases in Chenda’s language.

He’d stay up until two in the morning on video calls.

“Tell me about her,” I said one Sunday while we did dishes.

Tyler’s face softened. “She works at a garment factory. Ten-hour shifts, six days a week.

She’s been doing it since she was 13 to help her mom.”

“Thirteen?”

“Her dad died when she was little. It’s just her and her mom. And her younger sister, Luna.

She raised Luna while their mom worked. Been a parent since she was eight.”

I thought about Tyler at eight… riding bikes, playing with Legos.

“I want to meet her,” Tyler said suddenly.
