Home care — what to do right now
- Wash the area gently with soap and water.
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and itch.
- Use over-the-counter antihistamine or hydrocortisone cream for itch (follow directions).
- Avoid scratching — cover with a bandage if needed to prevent infection.
- If bites are from fleas/bed bugs, wash clothes and bedding in hot water and vacuum the area.
When to see a doctor immediately
- Spreading redness, warmth, severe pain, or pus
- Fever, chills, or feeling unwell
- Breathing difficulty, dizziness, or swollen face (possible severe allergic reaction)
- Bites in infants, elderly, or immunocompromised people with rapid worsening
