Home care — what to do right now

  • Wash the area gently with soap and water.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and itch.
  • Use over-the-counter antihistamine or hydrocortisone cream for itch (follow directions).
  • Avoid scratching — cover with a bandage if needed to prevent infection.
  • If bites are from fleas/bed bugs, wash clothes and bedding in hot water and vacuum the area.

When to see a doctor immediately

  • Spreading redness, warmth, severe pain, or pus
  • Fever, chills, or feeling unwell
  • Breathing difficulty, dizziness, or swollen face (possible severe allergic reaction)
  • Bites in infants, elderly, or immunocompromised people with rapid worsening
