The important issue of road safety for older drivers is once again on the agenda. While France adheres to the principle of a lifetime driving license, the Netherlands has taken a radical step: some older people are no longer allowed to drive trucks. This decision could be the start of a European revolution in driving license regulations.

Netherlands: People over 75 are no longer allowed to drive trucks

It’s official: Dutch drivers over 75 are no longer allowed to hold a C or CE driving license, which entitles them to drive trucks or vehicles with trailers. This decision, made under the Dutch Road Traffic Act, is based on public safety considerations.

Severe sanctions will be imposed in the event of a violation:

  • Okay, 1200 euros
  • Driving licence revoked for a maximum of 8 months

Older drivers are still allowed to drive cars or two-wheelers (driving license A or B), but must undergo regular medical examinations from the age of 60, and professional drivers from the age of 50.

Why this measure? Worrying figures.

Dutch authorities are basing their findings on alarming data. The risk increases with age: slower reactions, reduced eyesight, decreased alertness. This observation applies to all of Europe.

A striking example: In the Netherlands, more than 400 traffic fatalities in 2021 involved drivers over 75 years of age. These figures have reignited the debate about possible age restrictions.

In the Netherlands, holders of a category C driving licence must undergo regular medical examinations from the age of 50. However, once you reach the age of 75, your licence will be automatically revoked regardless of your health.

On the way to mandatory driving tests for older people across Europe?
