Then his tone softened. “My mother passed away two months ago.
It makes me feel better to do something good in her memory. It helps.”
Tears stung my eyes, blurring my vision. I hadn’t heard that kind of genuine kindness in such a long time.
He noticed me hesitating as I adjusted Lily’s carrier on my shoulder, shifting her weight.
“At least let me drive you home,” he said.
I wanted to refuse immediately.
