She didn’t even look up from her phone. “Dad said he’s not your bank,” she replied casually.

Her words struck harder than he could have imagined. In that instant, the man who had given his whole heart realized he was being treated like someone who didn’t quite belong.

Darren stared at the boarding pass, hurt and anger twisting together inside him. He had earned every cent he owned. He had loved her without conditions. And yet there he was — separated by a thin curtain between “First” and “Economy,” a symbol of something far deeper.

He couldn’t go through with it. He stepped off the plane, his chest heavy, his pride bruised.
