All eyes were directed towards Camila. The young mother, with the baby still in her arms and her cheek swelling rapidly, raised her eyes full of tears. For a moment, Nurse Sofia thought she was telling the truth, but then Camila spoke in a barely audible voice:

Sofia felt as if she had been punched in the stomach. He knew perfectly well what he had seen, but he also understood the fear in that woman’s eyes.

Ricardo smiled with satisfaction, knowing that he had once again managed to get his wife to protect him from the consequences of his violence.

With automatic movements she took her makeup case and began to apply foundation and concealer on the mark. It was a routine I knew all too well.
