That alone felt wrong. Amelia had always been careful, always aware. I stepped inside slowly, my heart pounding. What I saw stopped me in my tracks.

The apartment looked completely different.

Boxes lined the walls. Soft-colored ribbons sat on the table. Small folded clothes rested neatly on the couch. For a moment, confusion washed over me. Then fear followed. I wondered if loneliness had driven her to hold onto something imagined, something from the past.

Before I could speak, Amelia looked up and smiled.

“Surprise,” she said gently.

She explained that after our argument, she had done a lot of thinking. For the first time in years, she had been forced to confront who she was without the role of my caretaker. She realized that she had built her entire identity around keeping me safe—and that once I no longer needed her, she didn’t know where she belonged.

Instead of falling apart, she chose to grow.

She had applied to become a foster parent. Months of paperwork, interviews, and waiting had finally led to this moment. In her care was a five-year-old girl named Lily, who had recently lost her parents in an accident. Lily was quiet, cautious, and easily startled. She slept with the lights on and clung tightly to a worn stuffed bear.

When Lily slowly peeked out from behind the couch, something inside me shifted.
