Kyle hesitated. People were watching. Phones were out. The diner door had cracked open, curiosity spilling into concern. With a curse, Kyle shoved Madison toward the door where her mother, Nicole Parker, stood frozen, hands shaking as she pulled her daughter close.

Madison buried her face into Nicole’s jacket and whispered words that cracked something open for everyone close enough to hear.

“He hurts me when you’re not there.”

The night changed after that.

Police arrived. Statements were taken. Kyle argued loudly about rights and misunderstandings, but the marks on Madison’s arm told their own story. Jordan stayed until Nicole and Madison were safely in the back of a cruiser, until the diner lights flicked off and the crowd thinned. He left without giving his name.
