Sarcopenia: When Muscle Loss Becomes a Health Issue

Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. While it’s associated with aging, it is now recognized as a distinct medical condition, not an inevitable part of getting older.

Left unaddressed, sarcopenia can affect daily activities such as walking, standing, lifting, and maintaining balance—raising the risk of falls, injuries, and loss of independence. The earlier it’s identified, the more effectively it can be managed.

Why Does Sarcopenia Develop?

Muscle loss doesn’t happen overnight. It develops gradually and is influenced by several overlapping factors.

1. Natural Aging Processes

Muscle mass begins to decline as early as age 30, and the process accelerates significantly after 60. As we age:

  • Levels of muscle-supporting hormones like growth hormone and IGF-1 decrease
  • Muscle recovery slows
  • The body absorbs protein and nutrients less efficiently

These changes make it harder for muscles to maintain their size and strength.

2. Lifestyle Habits That Weaken Muscles

Everyday habits play a major role in muscle health. Factors that accelerate muscle loss include:

  • Sedentary lifestyles or prolonged sitting
  • Insufficient protein intake
  • Skipping meals or under-eating
  • Lack of resistance or weight-bearing activity

Vitamin D deficiency—very common in older adults—can further weaken muscle tone and coordination, increasing fall risk.
