At the time, I had no idea what that promise would demand.

Eli wasn’t just a child who had wandered off.

He was at the center of a sealed custody dispute involving wealth, influence, and a history of violence carefully hidden behind legal protections. Months earlier, his mother had tried to leave with him. She had been found injured, hospitalized, and labeled unstable. Eli had been placed temporarily with his father.

The lake incident wasn’t an accident.

It had been staged to look like one.

The messages traced back to a disposable phone linked to a private security firm connected to the father. Their role involved managing risks, ensuring outcomes. My presence that night—my decision to stop—had disrupted something that was meant to go unnoticed.
