Initial Tsunami Waves Hit Hawaii
By Tuesday evening, the tsunami waves began hitting Hawaii with full force. The waves reached coastal areas by 7:15 p.m. local time, and sirens sounded across the islands.
In Oahu, the first recorded waves were 4 feet in height. Although authorities feared larger waves, the initial warning was downgraded to an advisory, signaling that the worst may have passed. Experts anticipated that the worst danger would likely follow the first wave.
