Soft jazz floated through the air, polished and inoffensive, while conversations overlapped in a carefully curated hum of achievement, gossip, and comparison.

At the center of it all stood my younger sister, Brooke, glowing beneath the chandeliers like she had personally summoned the light, her left hand lifted at just the right angle so the diamond on her finger could catch every possible reflection, while my parents flanked her with the pride of people who believed their success could be measured by how loudly others admired their children.
