The porch felt like it was tilting.
“So why show up now?” Daniel asked. “Why today?”
“Someone showed me. She looked happy. And I thought, what if that thing is still there?
What if you never knew? I don’t want that on me. I risked it and checked with the agency.
Good thing it wasn’t a closed adoption.”
For a moment, something like gratitude stirred in my chest.
Then she kept talking.
“I came here and did the right thing,” she said. “And I think it’s fair we talk about compensation.”
Everything inside me went still.
“Excuse me?” I said.
You clearly have more than I ever did. I gave you information that could save her life. I think I deserve something.”
Daniel let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“You came to our daughter’s birthday,” he said, “told us she might have cancer, and now you’re asking for money?”
