Instead of escorting the elderly man out in handcuffs, Officer Miller walked with him toward the checkout counter. He picked up the items the man had attempted to take—and then added more. Fresh vegetables. Milk. A prepared chicken. A larger bag of nutritious dog food.
“You’re not going to jail today,” the officer said gently. “You’re going home with food.”
