After the guest left, the house felt smaller.
“You embarrassed me,” Thomas said, his voice low, controlled. “You don’t get to change the rules.”
He laughed once, harshly. “You don’t know what you’re saying.”
She reached into the drawer and placed the recorder on the counter.
“I know exactly what I’m saying,” she replied. “And so will everyone else.”
His expression shifted—not fear yet, but calculation. “You wouldn’t.”
“You already helped me,” Claire said. “You talk when you think you’re safe.”
The final break came not with shouting, but with exposure.
