How to react in case of brake failure on a vehicle

Gradually reduce speed by downshifting.

Using the gearbox to naturally slow down the vehicle is an effective technique.

  • Manual gearbox:

Gradually shift to lower gears  ( 4th → 3rd → 2nd → 1st ).

This allows the  engine braking to be used  to reduce speed.

  • Automatic transmission:

Switch to  manual mode  or to position  “L” (Low) or “2” , which forces the car to move at a lower speed.

Why is this method useful?

By downshifting, the engine acts as a  natural brake , thus slowing the vehicle down without using the brakes.

Use the handbrake with caution!

WARNING: Avoid sudden movements!

The handbrake only acts on  the rear wheels . Abrupt use can lock these wheels and cause the vehicle to skid dangerously.
