He set down his fork. “She said she got a shoebox when she was a kid.
From a charity program. There was a letter inside and a photo, and she’s been trying to find the person who sent it.”
“It was mine, Mom.
The one I packed that Christmas. She figured it out from the photo.”
I didn’t know what to say.
“She said that letter changed her life. That she kept it under her pillow for years.
That she learned English just so she could read it without help.”
Tears blurred my vision.
“She wants to thank me. That’s all.”
But I could see in his eyes it was already more than that.
