Chapter 3: The Discovery

The truth emerged almost by accident. My father, using an old phone he rarely used, had been recording his conversations with Claudia. These recordings captured every manipulation, every threat disguised as concern. A vigilant neighbor also noticed unusual activity and preserved copies of suspicious transaction documents. By the time I discovered the scale of her deceit, my parents had already fled their tiny rented room and ended up on the streets, gripped by terror over threats that existed only in Claudia’s stories. That is how I found them that night in the rain—my mother with a plastic bag over her head, my father shielding her with his coat, both shivering not just from the cold, but from shame and fear.

“We didn’t want you involved,” my mother whispered. “She said they would hurt you.”

Something inside me shattered completely at that moment.
